Ullmann Condensation

The Ullmann condensation – frequently referred to as the Ullmann reaction – is a copper-catalyzed chemical process utilized for the synthesis of a diverse range of coupled aromatic compounds. This reaction facilitates the formation of biaryls, aryl ethers, aryl thioethers, aryl nitriles, and aryl amines, demonstrating its versatility. First described by German chemist Fritz Ullmann in the early 20th century, this foundational reaction remains a valuable tool for organic chemists, offering a pathway to build complex molecules through the strategic joining of aromatic rings.
