Umpolung

Within organic chemistry, the term ‘umpolung’ – a German word meaning ‘polarity reversal’ – describes a strategic chemical modification designed to invert the typical reactivity of a functional group. Rather than relying on the inherent charge preference of a group, umpolung involves transforming it to direct reactivity in an unexpected manner. This technique is particularly powerful for forging new carbon-carbon bonds, a critical step in synthesizing complex molecular architectures. By temporarily altering the charge distribution, umpolung enables reactions that wouldn’t be achievable with the original functional group, providing a versatile tool for organic chemists to construct intricate and structurally diverse compounds.
