Nitriles

Nitriles are a significant class of organic compounds defined by the presence of a cyano group (-C≡N), a triple bond linking a carbon atom to a nitrogen atom. These compounds are often considered “disguised” carboxylic acids because the cyano group can be readily converted to a carboxylic acid through hydrolysis – a reaction with water. Initially, hydrolysis of a nitrile yields an amide, and further hydrolysis then breaks the amide bond, ultimately producing a carboxylic acid. This conversion pathway highlights the versatility of nitriles as synthetic intermediates and underscores their importance in organic synthesis. Furthermore, they can exhibit a wide range of chemical properties and biological activities.
