Quenching

The term ‘quenching’ encompasses a diverse range of processes, all characterized by a reduction in light emission – specifically, a decrease in fluorescence or phosphorescence. This reduction can be achieved through various methods. In spectroscopy, quenching refers to the diminishing of light intensity from a substance after excitation.
Furthermore, ‘quenching’ is frequently used to halt a chemical reaction, typically by introducing a reagent that efficiently consumes a reactant or its associated catalyst, effectively terminating the process. Alternatively, quenching can also describe the rapid cooling of a material following a heat treatment, stabilizing its properties.
