Reduction

In chemistry, reduction is a fundamental chemical process characterized by the *gain* of electrons by a molecule, atom, or ion. This gain in electrons directly translates to a decrease in the species’ oxidation state – a measure of its apparent charge based on the number of electrons. Reduction is fundamentally the inverse of oxidation, where a substance *loses* electrons and consequently increases its oxidation state. Importantly, reduction can be described through various mechanisms; often, it involves the addition of hydrogen atoms, or the removal of oxygen atoms from a substance. These processes are commonly observed in redox reactions, which are central to many chemical transformations, from industrial synthesis to biological pathways.
