Unit cell

A unit cell is the smallest repeating unit of a crystal lattice that, when replicated in three dimensions, can reproduce the entire crystal structure. It’s essentially the fundamental building block from which the larger, more complex crystal emerges. Think of it as a miniature, self-contained version of the entire crystal; repeating this unit cell in all directions creates the complete, ordered arrangement of atoms that defines the crystal’s overall shape and properties. Understanding unit cells is critical for characterizing and predicting the behaviour of crystalline materials, as it provides a framework for analyzing their structure and composition.
