Darzens Reaction

The Darzens reaction is a pivotal chemical transformation that brings together a ketone or aldehyde with an α-haloester, facilitated by a base. This synergistic process yields a novel compound, known as a glycidic ester, which boasts a distinctive epoxy ring structure. The reaction’s mechanistic underpinnings involve the transfer of electrons and protons, leading to the formation of a new bond between the two reactants. As a result, the Darzens reaction embodies the principles of condensation chemistry.
