Phosphorylation

Phosphorylation is a fundamental biochemical process involving the addition of a phosphate group (PO₃) to a molecule, typically a protein or carbohydrate. This reaction is of paramount importance within biological systems, playing a critical role in energy storage and transfer, most notably within ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Beyond energy metabolism, phosphorylation is extensively involved in regulating protein function, influencing enzymatic activity, signal transduction pathways, and cellular responses. Essentially, it’s a key mechanism for controlling countless processes within living organisms.
