Decarboxylation

The decarboxylation reaction is a pivotal chemical transformation that liberates a molecule from a critical functional group. By shedding its carboxyl (-COOH) moiety, a compound releases carbon dioxide (CO2), setting the stage for further biochemical and chemical transformations. This process often necessitates thermal energy input, and it has far-reaching implications in both biological systems and synthetic chemistry, particularly in contexts where carboxylic acids and cannabinoids are involved.
What is the best method of decarboxylation?
Thermal decarboxylation is the most straightforward and widely used method. For substrates that are harder to decarboxylate, catalytic methods or chemical reagents like soda lime are employed.
