Volatility

Volatility describes a substance’s inherent tendency to vaporize – to transition readily from its liquid or solid state into a gaseous (vapor) phase. It’s a fundamental property that indicates how easily a substance’s molecules can escape from the condensed phase. A substance’s volatility is directly linked to the strength of the intermolecular forces holding its molecules together; weaker forces result in greater volatility. More volatile substances, like alcohols and ethers, evaporate or even sublimate – directly changing from a solid to a gas – more quickly than less volatile substances, such as water or paraffin wax. Understanding volatility is crucial in processes like distillation and determining the stability of volatile compounds.
