Tollens’ Reagent

Tollens’ reagent is a widely utilized chemical solution within organic chemistry, specifically employed to detect the presence of aldehydes. This solution comprises silver nitrate dissolved in aqueous ammonia, a combination that creates a visually distinct reaction. The reagent is frequently referred to as the “silver mirror test” due to its ability to produce a shiny, silver-coloured precipitate when reacted with aldehydes. This characteristic reaction arises from the oxidation of the aldehyde by silver ions, leading to the formation of a silver mirror. The test serves as a reliable indicator of aldehyde functionality and remains a fundamental tool for characterizing and identifying organic compounds.
