Monomer

A monomer is a relatively small molecule that serves as the fundamental building block for constructing larger molecules known as polymers. Essentially, monomers are the individual units that combine through a process called polymerization to create these larger, chain-like macromolecules. Monomers can range in complexity, from simple molecules like ethylene to more elaborate structures. The polymerization process involves the formation of chemical bonds between monomers, creating a repeating structural unit. Understanding the properties of individual monomers and how they link together is essential for controlling and predicting the characteristics of the resulting polymer. Therefore, monomers are truly the “bricks” from which polymers are built.
