Keto Group

In organic chemistry, the term “keto group” specifically denotes a carbonyl functional group, characterized by a carbon-oxygen double bond (C=O). Crucially, this carbonyl carbon is simultaneously bonded to two carbon atoms – these are the defining features of ketones. Ketones represent a significant class of organic compounds, distinguished by this unique structural arrangement. Unlike aldehydes, which possess only one carbon directly bonded to the carbonyl carbon, ketones exhibit a more substantial carbon chain attached to the carbonyl group. This structural difference impacts their chemical reactivity and properties, making them vital compounds in various organic reactions and applications. Understanding the keto group is fundamental to grasping ketone chemistry.
