Alcohols / Alkoxides / Phenols / Hydroxy compounds

All compounds that contain at least one hydroxyl group. Alcohols can be prepared by many different methods involving hydration reactions, reductions, substitutions, hydroformylations and others. They can serve as suitable substrates for various transformations as protection, activation, substitution, addition etc. Primary alcohols can be oxidized either to aldehydes or to carboxylic acids while oxidation of secondary alcohols normally terminates at the ketone. Alcohols are found widely in nature, often containing polyhydroxylated fragments such as in saccharides and hydroxy group is a part of many important bioactive compounds.
