Valency

Valency, also known as valence, describes an atom’s combining capacity – essentially, the number of chemical bonds it can form with other atoms. This measure indicates how many other atoms an element can attach to when constructing a molecule. The basis for determining valency lies in the atom’s valence electrons: these are the electrons residing in the outermost shell and are directly involved in forming chemical bonds. Elements with a specific number of valence electrons often exhibit a predictable valency, allowing chemists to understand and predict the formation of molecules and their properties. Therefore, valency is a crucial factor in determining the structure and behaviour of chemical compounds.
