Carboxylic acids / salts

Carboxylic acids are organic acids that contain carboxy functional group, and their salts are formed by deprotonation with appropriate base. They can be prepared by many methods but typical is oxidation of alcohols or aldehydes, ozonolysis of olefins, hydrolysis of nitriles, esters and amides or carbonation of organometallic reagents. Carboxylic acids are common in nature (amino acids, alkanoic acids, fatty acids) and they are widely used in the production of polymers, pharmaceuticals, solvents, and food additives. Important carboxylate salts are soaps.
