Resonance

Resonance describes a phenomenon where the bonding in certain molecules or ions cannot be adequately depicted by a single Lewis structure. Instead, a more accurate representation is achieved by utilizing a *set* of contributing structures – often referred to as resonance structures or canonical structures. These structures are not actual physical isomers that exist in equilibrium, but rather hypothetical representations that illustrate different arrangements of electrons. Collectively, they define the true electronic structure of the molecule, known as the resonance hybrid. The hybrid combines the partial positive and negative charges of each contributing structure, providing a stable and accurate depiction of electron distribution.
