Kinetic control

In chemistry, kinetic control describes a reaction mechanism where the final product distribution isn’t solely dictated by the thermodynamic stability of the possible products. Instead, the primary factor determining the major product ratio is the *rate* at which each product is formed. A reaction exhibiting kinetic control prioritizes the pathway leading to the faster-forming product, regardless of whether that product possesses lower overall energy (i.e., is less thermodynamically stable). Essentially, the reaction “favors” the product born from the faster reaction step. This highlights the importance of considering reaction rates – often determined by factors like activation energy – alongside thermodynamic considerations when predicting reaction outcomes.
